Ant Invasion – The Pavement Ant

Ant Invasion

A Pavement Ant colony can take over a swath of your driveway or kitchen counter, proving that some small things can make a large impact:

Not surprising but certainly true, the Pavement ants earned their name because they nest in cracks in driveways and under sidewalks.

You will notice piling of the dirt they have excavated in a mound on the top of the pavement. They will also nest under rocks and in stacks of wood.

Though Pavement ants are typically associated for a fondness of sweets, they will consume a wide variety of food. Besides sweets like sugar, honey and nectar, they will consume grease, dead insects, bread, meats and cheese. Small seeds are also collected and stored in the nest. If a few scouts find food resources inside a structure, they will infest the area, it’s like an invasion. They forage in trails for distances of up to 30 feet and are known to climb masonry walls that enter occupied areas. Pavement ants are the most common ant found indoors, their small size and great population can make it difficult to control and infestations are best treated by a Pest Control Professional.

For preventative measures eliminate any standing water, keep the tree branches and other plants in your yard trimmed away from structure, sometimes pavement ants use these branches to get into your interior. Make sure that there are no cracks or little openings around your house/building sealing them if possible. Ensure that firewood and building materials are not stored next to your home/building because pavement ants like to build nests in stacks of wood. Indoors, always clean up spills and crumbs on counter tops and kitchen floors as soon as possible during warmer months.
